How to Change Ideology in HOI4

Switch a country's ruling party and ideology with the set_ruling_party and add_party_popularity console commands in Hearts of Iron IV.

A coup or a long focus tree is usually needed to flip a country's government in Hearts of Iron IV. The console changes the ruling ideology instantly with set_ruling_party — no political power, time or civil war required.

How to change the ruling party

  1. Open the console with the ~ key.
  2. Type set_ruling_party followed by an ideology.
  3. Press Enter — your government flips to that ideology immediately.

Examples

  • set_ruling_party fascism — turn your country fascist
  • set_ruling_party communism — turn it communist
  • set_ruling_party democratic — or neutrality for non-aligned

Building up popularity first

To raise an ideology's support without flipping outright — letting an election or civil war happen naturally — use add_party_popularity, for example add_party_popularity fascism 50. See every ideology and its sub-types in the ideologies list.

Frequently asked questions

How do you change ideology in HOI4 with the console?

Open the console and run set_ruling_party followed by an ideology — set_ruling_party fascism, communism, democratic or neutrality. Your country's government flips to that ideology instantly, with no coup or focus tree required.

What are the four ideologies in HOI4?

The four ruling ideologies are fascism, communism, democratic and neutrality (non-aligned). set_ruling_party accepts any of these as its argument.

How do I raise an ideology's popularity without flipping the country?

Use add_party_popularity [ideology] [amount] — for example add_party_popularity fascism 50 raises fascist support by 50%. This grows support gradually instead of switching the government outright, so you can trigger an organic election or civil war.

Does changing ideology start a civil war in HOI4?

set_ruling_party flips the government directly with no civil war. A civil war only happens through the normal game systems, such as a coup or a focus, not from this console command.
